What Not to Store in a Storage Unit

An often-overlooked variable of using a storage unit, what exactly are the taboo items in which I should avoid storing? Understanding this can mean the difference between having a good experience and being caught out unknowingly and possibly even facing prosecution as a result.

This month’s blog at Gilmorton Storage we discuss what not to store in a storage unit. For more, call us in Leicestershire on 01455 209 209.

Animals

Believe it or not this happens. People have stored and even forgot about animals they have put in the unit, as can be imagined the unpleasant aftermath of this is why most if not all self-storage companies have a zero-tolerance policy regarding this.

In the past, reports of animals such as fish, reptiles and even dogs have been made by storage companies. The obvious implications of animal cruelty often lead to prosecution as a result of this.

Food

Perishable food items are known to attract pests and moulds, so it stands to reason this is seen as a big no go where storage units are concerned as to not provoke infestations. Even regarding shelf stable items, they still pose a real risk of attracting rodents and insects, whilst some items such as canned foods even pose a risk of combustion.

Whilst company polices can obviously vary, the best course may be to treat perishable foods as a no go to remain on the safe side, as breaching of policy blatant or not may incur a fine. At the very least, it would be wise to check company policy before storing items.

Priceless Items

Be it sentimental or tangible, items of irreplaceable value to you should not be placed in storage units for any amount of time. Failure to collect these items on time may see them placed into auction, not to mention the possibility of theft, with storage units being far from unheard of targets. In the case of an unfortunate event, you will be highly unlikely to see any form of compensation.

However, some storage companies will encourage the storage of antiques and valuables and with this encouragement offer top quality security to boot. Despite this if the value is as such you are better off keeping the item close by.
